Big Changes For Empty Nesters

Tara Molina Real Estate

When you’re about to start a family, people say “your life will change forever.” But what they don’t say is how incredible that change will be. Starting a family is one of the greatest joys in life, and when it comes time for your youngest to move out all those feelings of “your life will change forever” come rushing back.

All of a sudden your schedule and lifestyle change completely. You’re used to having dinner with your kids, spending lazy evening together, and it seems that suddenly those moments you have cherished for years are suddenly out of reach.

Again, what no one tells you about your kids leaving home is that it’s just another adventure – and it can be a GREAT one!

Hear me out...

We love our kids, and we have spent years nurturing them and giving them the tools they need to be successful adults. But now it’s time to spend time restructuring your life. Having an empty nest means you have the time to design your lifestyle all over again.

Something that every empty nester thinks about is when should you start thinking about downsizing your home. Your home is most likely larger than you need it, filled with belongings that haven’t been touched in years. So how do you cope with finding a new place to live? Your memories in your current home are precious and can be very difficult to leave behind. It’s important to remember that you’re not leaving these memories behind! You’re going to be creating new ones. You’re not disappointing your kids for leaving their childhood home, you’re liberating yourself from space and items that you no longer need.

Downsizing your home may seem like an evil that you don’t want to entertain, but it could be a necessity. A large home for one or two people is challenging.

Moving on is just a new chapter in your book!

Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re downsizing:

Downsizing is not downgrading

Moving from a family home into a town home, apartment, or just a smaller house doesn’t mean you need to give up the luxuries you are used to. It’s possible to still have a large kitchen for your family to visit or a large backyard for pets to play in. Your appliances and amenities can still be top of the line, you might even be able to afford higher quality amenities than you had in the past! It’s not sounding so bad, is it?

Downsizing is simply reducing the space you no longer need – not the quality of the home. Extra bedrooms for example, or a large storage space are no longer necessities. Having a beautiful patio and the best kitchen appliances can be your compromise

You Can Move Wherever You Want!

When we have kids we need to live by schools, playgrounds, parks, everything that they need. With your newfound situation, you can relocate to wherever you want! Whether that’s a trendy downtown area, or a quiet and peaceful neighbourhood the choice is completely yours. Even moving from Calgary to Airdrie is a move that could be just what you need to jumpstart your new maturing lifestyle.

You Have The Luxury To Design Your Own Lifestyle

When we have kids we’re so wrapped up in their lives that sometimes it results in neglecting our own. With the house to yourself you can start those yoga classes you’ve always wanted to try, host dinner parties with your friends, spend quality alone time with your partner in your home, anything you want!

Now, does downsizing your home still seem scary? Maybe… But that’s why you have Tara in your corner. Tara experienced a very difficult downsizing process with her grandmother and is now on a mission to make sure that people looking to downsize have a positive experience.
